Speedway council appoints Chris Milhorn as next fire chief as Chief Fishburne prepares to retire

The Speedway Town Council unanimously approved the appointment of Assistant Chief Chris Milhorn as the town’s next fire chief, effective when Chief Fishburne retires Aug. 3. Town Manager Grant Kleinhans recommended Milhorn at the July 13 meeting, saying Milhorn has served the department for many years and has the experience to lead through budget and operational challenges.
“K I found him to be a hardworking, honest, and committed individual to the town and his duties,” Kleinhans said in presenting the recommendation. Councilor Nick Sturgeon moved to approve the appointment and Councilor Vince Noblet seconded; the vote was 3‑0.
Retiring Chief Fishburne, who said he has served nearly 37 years, offered a public farewell and endorsed Milhorn. “Serving this community and leading the brave men of this department has been the profound honor of my professional life,” Fishburne said, and he told the council he supports the transition.
Council and staff noted one outstanding administrative item: a compensation decision for the incoming chief. Kleinhans said the matter was the subject of recent email exchanges and that the council intends to finalize compensation before Aug. 3; he and Milhorn said the compensation will be included as part of the budget process.
Fishburne announced a short public reception at Station 80 on Aug. 3 from 1 to 3 p.m. to mark his retirement. The council’s formal motion to appoint Milhorn and the subsequent vote are recorded in the meeting minutes.
