Kane County Board of Canvassers certifies Republican primary results

The Kane County Board of Canvassers on July 2 accepted the official canvass of the June 23 Republican primary, county officials said.

Clerk/Auditor Chameill Lamb said the canvass process ‘‘is to verify election data accuracy, ensure transparency, and instill public confidence in the final outcome’’ and to start the statutory timeline for recounts and for issuing certificates of election or nomination. Heather Narramore presented the vote totals, saying ‘‘there were 3,409 active voters for the Republican primary, with a total of 1,821 ballots counted.”

Narramore said those 1,821 ballots included 1,665 mail-in ballots, 32 early in-person votes, 124 election-day in-person votes and five provisional ballots that required proof of Utah ID and 30-day residency. Election staff reported 43 ballots were challenged—mostly for missing signatures or required identifying information; 22 of those challenged ballots were cured (about 51%), and 17 were rejected for arriving after the 8:00 p.m. deadline.

Assessor Ryan Maddux moved to accept the canvass ‘‘as presented.’’ The motion carried with all three Board of Canvassers voting in favor: Commissioner Gwen Brown—aye; Assessor Ryan Maddux—aye; Treasurer Keiren Chatterley—aye. Commissioner Brown then moved to adjourn; the meeting was adjourned.

The canvass formalizes the unofficial results and begins the period during which candidates may seek recounts or other post-election remedies; the county will issue certificates to successful candidates following completion of the canvass process.
