Assembly presses administration on erosion, flood recovery and VPSO housing amid storm response

Planning Director Noah Naylor said he is coordinating with Ingemar Mathiasson to pursue erosion grants, and Acting Mayor Clara Jones and staff encouraged communities to stop by Borough offices for disaster-assistance information. Chris Hatch summarized the Borough’s flood recovery efforts, said the State cleared three additional hires for recovery work though one hire may soon depart, and said the Borough currently has 13 VPSO positions staffed.
At public comment, Kotzebue resident Ann Howarth thanked crews that responded to a recent storm and asked whether the Borough would install rock barriers before spring breakup to prevent further bank loss.
Members asked for specifics: Member Reid Magdanz inquired about the Emergency Service Coordinator position approved in the budget and how it would function; Hatch recommended updating Borough code to clarify roles. Members also asked whether mitigation planning would ensure community input, and whether housing availability would be sufficient for VPSO assignments in remote villages.
