Members also addressed a latent anomaly in the village's charter and regulations that permits on-the-spot write-in candidates on election day without prior nomination or the usual candidate filing requirements. The chair outlined options: do nothing and keep the long-standing practice, recognize the informal policy, or change the code to require write-in nominations by a deadline. Several council members favored postponing any change until after the current election to avoid mid-cycle rule changes.
The council discussed practical safeguards if write-ins occur: post‑election verification requirements, conflict-of-interest forms, and potential council appointment if there are insufficient formal candidates. "We said we recognize this issue. We choose not to do anything about it [this year]," the chair said, while asking the election committee to prepare clearer language and procedures for future consideration.
The council emphasized outreach at upcoming community events. Election committee members asked councilors not to let the March 1 LaFerm event pass without using it to recruit candidates and distribute materials; the committee reminded everyone that the formal nomination notice goes out Feb. 20 (75 days before election day).
