Transfer-station staff presented multiple operational proposals on April 16, including a short-term Styrofoam collection pilot, separating copper for resale, expanded cardboard intake, and a resident composting program. The board also approved an amendment to the employee boot reimbursement policy.
Staff described an interim Styrofoam solution that would repurpose a covered trailer, coordinate with a neighboring municipalitys collection containers and evaluate volumes for a potential future compacting machine. The pilot would give the town data on Styrofoam volumes and labor costs before seeking grant funding for a dedicated compactor. Staff said they could repair the trailer in-house and suggested starting a one-year pilot to refine numbers.
On metals, staff explained separating copper (and collecting cords) to increase revenue while retaining mixed metals for standard recycling; they said secured storage and separation work is handled at the transfer station. They also described a composting program with training sessions and built demonstration compost bins for resident use; roughly 32 people had signed up with a waiting list.
Separately, the board amended a motion to raise boot reimbursement to a $150 maximum per employee and made the policy effective Jan. 1, 2026 so staff who already submitted reimbursements that year can be adjusted. The motion passed unanimously.
