Michiana council approves security cameras, personnel pay increase and a slate of administrative measures

The Village of Michiana council on Sept. 6 approved several administrative measures, including security cameras for the park and a 9% salary increase for two departments. The council also approved routine financial motions and instructed further review of a police contract.
Tim McCarthy moved to contract Omni Systems to install security cameras around the village and park for up to $8,000; Brian Cassidy seconded and the motion passed on a roll-call vote, 5-0. Council members cited recent vandalism and the value of protecting village assets as reasons for the purchase.
After a closed attorney-client session invoked under Section 8(H) of the Michigan Open Meetings Act, council member Tim McCarthy said the council — following counsel input — would implement a 9% total salary increase for the Department of Works and the village office. McCarthy moved to approve the 9% increase to take effect on the next payroll after each employee meets with a council member; Mike Botelho seconded and the motion passed.
The council also took several routine financial and planning votes: it amended a CD rate from 4% to 3.75% to allow prudent reinvestment decisions (motion by Tim McCarthy; second by Nancy Thill; roll call 5-0); approved the check register of $162,192.46 (motion by Tim McCarthy; second by Mike Botelho); and approved a Planning Commission motion to pause Sport Courts construction until the Master Plan framework is completed (motion by Mike Botelho; second by Tim McCarthy; roll call 5-0).
The police contract was described as looking good with minor changes; Police Chief Ryan Layman said Grand Beach will review it and both village councils will prepare to review and vote in their October meetings.
The council set its next meeting for Oct. 11 at 12:00 p.m. EST.
