Michiana moves water upgrades forward as Grand Beach reviews proposed 50‑year contract

Council members and staff updated the Village of Michiana on water and infrastructure work at the May 9 meeting.
Council member Mike Mumper reported the water project is progressing and that the Village is pushing contractor Merritt to begin work; he said the Village plans to issue a single bid package that will cover both related projects. Mumper also said a new, stronger pump has been installed.
In old business, Tim McCarthy said Grand Beach will hold a council meeting to review a proposed 50‑year water contract. The Michiana council did not take a final position at the May 9 meeting and indicated it will monitor Grand Beach's forthcoming discussion.
Public Works Superintendent Rick Reitz described recent operational work — leaf pickup, mulching and repairs to landings — and noted proposals in his report for two additional drywells that would include fall paving of the drywell areas. Council members asked that departments continue coordination to align bids and schedules.
No formal motions to change water project scope or to approve the contract were recorded at the May 9 meeting; staff were directed to continue coordination and to pursue the single‑bid approach discussed.
