Michiana council approves up to $40,000 for park irrigation, grading and hydroseeding

The Village of Michiana council on Sept. 6 approved up to $40,000 for a park renovation project that includes irrigation, grading and hydroseeding.
Council member Mike Mumper moved to approve two vendor proposals — Down to Earth for $19,000 and Serviscape for $20,260 — and amended the motion so the total would not exceed $40,000; Tim McCarthy seconded. The motion passed on a roll-call vote, 5-0.
Mumper said the work will include installing an irrigation system, regrading and hydroseeding the park lawn; timing is weather-dependent. He also said a resident who wished to remain anonymous has offered a substantial donation toward the project. The council will use budgeted capital improvement funds in addition to the donation.
Council members agreed the project area will be fenced off during and after work until spring to allow seed to establish. Mumper said the playground and pickleball court will remain open; access will be along the front of Cherokee and through the basketball area.
The vote followed discussion of related park and hall projects: Tree Board member Nancy Thill said new trees purchased with a grant will be planted Sept. 24, and the Tree Board must submit grant expenditure paperwork by Sept. 30; the tree-grant completion date is Sept. 1, 2025.
The council requested residents avoid the hydroseeded areas while grass establishes. No opponents or no-vote were recorded on the motion.
The project is expected to begin within the next week, subject to weather and contractor scheduling.
