Cold Bay council certifies Oct. 1 election; two seats remain vacant

The Cold Bay City Council on Oct. 10, 2024, unanimously accepted the by-mail results of the Oct. 1 regular election, certifying one write-in winner and noting two council seats remain vacant.
Council Member Connie Newton moved to approve the meeting agenda and Council Member Robert Walker seconded; the motion carried unanimously. The council then considered certification of the Oct. 1 election. City staff reported that three council seats were on the ballot but only one person declared candidacy, leaving two seats unfilled. Staff said eight individuals were written in: two write-ins received three votes each, two received two votes each, and four received one vote each.
Staff told the council that the individual written in for Seat C with three votes accepted the office. The individual written in for Seat G with three votes declined, as did the write-in who received two votes. One write-in who received one vote accepted; another write-in did not qualify, according to staff. Council Member Jae McKee said he did not receive his ballot in the mail; city staff member Lorie verified his address was on file as correct.
After discussion, Council Member Robert Walker moved to accept the by-mail regular election results and Council Member Connie Newton seconded. All present voted in favor; the motion passed and the results were certified.
No members of the public offered comments. The council recorded no additional council comments. Mayor Jeff Wasley moved to adjourn at 2:15 p.m.; Connie Newton seconded and the motion carried.
