The Clackamas County Historic Review Board on Tuesday approved a 160-square-foot storage shed at the Mark Prairie Schoolhouse, moving the project forward after a short review and a vote that passed by majority.
Staff presented land-use application Z0193 and recommended approval, noting the proposed location and design were intended to maintain compatibility with the historic site. Board members questioned whether corrugated metal roofing was historically appropriate for the property. An applicant representative explained that the adjacent WPA-era outhouse has corrugated metal dating to the 1930s and that the primary schoolhouse roof has since been replaced with other materials.
"It had a standing seam metal roof that was probably out of the fifties and over an old, old cedar shingle roof," the applicant representative said, describing earlier roof work and later rehabilitation efforts. The board heard that the shed will include a solar-powered roof vent and a concrete, waterproof floor to reduce moisture risk for artifacts stored there.
Board members and the applicant agreed to minor edits to the staff report (staff noted a typographical reference to a 'pool house') and confirmed that the applicant will document vent and hardware details in the project file. A motion to approve the application was moved by Sherry and seconded by Pam; the chair announced a majority in favor.
The applicant noted the broader restoration history of the schoolhouse: "We had a contractor that told us it would be $200,000 and take us a year. It took us 5 years at $1,200,000," the representative said, underscoring community investment and grant funding that supported earlier restoration work. The board concluded the shed design, combined with the ventilation and waterproofing plans, met the conditions staff identified.
The board did not specify additional conditions beyond the corrected report language and the agreement to file vent/hardware documentation. Staff will incorporate the applicant's supplied images and hardware examples into the record.
