Acting Secretary of Natural Resources Sydney Bridal reported to the Resource Committee that a recent fishing derby attracted more than 500 people and featured participation from Cherokee Nation fish and wildlife staff who assisted children with lures and identification of local species.
"There was a lot of people that showed up — there's over 500 people that showed up," a councilor said during questioning; Bridal confirmed the wildlife team "does a good job" and that its staff "love kids fishing derbies," adding that the department is coordinating multi-departmental outreach and plans to continue monthly programming at the Capitol Park.
Committee members praised the wildlife staff for their outreach and hands-on work with children, citing an example of a 6-year-old who caught a 14-inch fish and enjoyed conversation with the wildlife team. Bridal said the department will continue to expand community events and collaborate with other departments and partners.
No formal actions accompanied the report; the department will provide follow-up information as requested by committee members at future meetings.
