Cherokee Nation vocational director outlines apprenticeship push after Job Corps ranking

Diane Kelly, executive director for vocational programs, told the Cherokee Nation council that the Nation’s Talking Leaves Job Corps center ranked sixth nationally out of about 120 centers and that staff are pursuing partnerships to expand trades training.
"Talking Leaves got a number 6 in the nation out of a 120 job course centers," Kelly said, and described talks with the Home Builders Institute about establishing a regional training hub that could support expanded apprenticeship opportunities.
Kelly said the department is planning an apprenticeship forum with the U.S. Department of Labor, union halls and apprenticeship programs; invitations for council members will go out Sept. 16. "We plan on going after some apprenticeship grants," she said.
Councilor Danny Callison praised local staff, singling out Jennifer Edison’s team for quick responses to constituent needs; Kelly said she would pass the compliment along.
Kelly also reported the department’s ongoing work with allied programs, including nursing and LPN training pipelines, and said staff recently participated in cross-agency training with the Cherokee Nation Foundation to improve how services are explained at public events.
The council received the report with no formal action; Kelly closed by asking members to attend the planned apprenticeship session and watch for grant opportunities.
