At its May 21 meeting the Cemetery Committee discussed two separate family offers to convey small cemetery parcels to the town and reviewed several operational items funded by the Selectboard.
Town Clerk Gail Pelotte reported a request from the Holt family regarding Herrin Cemetery: the family would convey the portion of the property they can transfer to the town, after which the town would assume care for that area. Gail also said Lynda Quinn, co-owner of the adjacent Quinn Family Cemetery, is willing to convey land to the town and would permit the town to sell cremation-only plots in that area; the Quinns asked that low stones be allowed so the area can be mowed conventionally.
Committee members did not adopt a formal conveyance or sales policy at the meeting but registered the offers and discussed next steps for clarifying ownership and permissible plot sales. Gail said North Cemetery maps have been corrected per information from Cara and Davida and that she will register those maps. Mallbons Mills property-line work is partly complete; Gail has contacted the surveying firm Sackett & Brake for new surveys and asked for rolled copies of maps the firm previously produced. Kevin Nelson offered to follow up on obtaining digital copies from town IT.
The committee noted several items the Selectboard approved on May 19: funding to register cemetery maps and purchase storage tubes; money to buy stone braces for broken headstones; signage for Larone and Pooler/East Cemeteries; and surveys for Old Bloomfield, Pooler and Larone. Flags for the cemeteries have been purchased and are in place. Jason is expected to order braces for Southside after Memorial Day; the sexton report listed no other items.
Votes at a glance: the committee approved the March 19, 2026 minutes (motion by Kevin Nelson, second by Mary Lou Mollerus; yes 5, no 0, abstained 1) and later moved to adjourn (motion by Melvin Burnham, second by Mary Lou Mollerus) at 10:20 a.m.
Next steps: Gail will proceed with map registration for North Cemetery; Kevin will pursue digital map copies; Sackett & Brake will be contacted about pending surveys; the committee will revisit conveyance details and any policy questions about selling cremation-only plots at a future meeting (next meeting June 18 at 9:00 a.m.).
