Solon City board approves routine business, $536,117.93 in bills and personnel actions; schedules Sunshine Law training

The Solon City Board of Education on July 13 approved routine business including minutes, bills totaling $536,117.93 and several personnel and policy items as it prepared for the 2026–27 school year.
The board approved minutes of the June 30, 2026 records commission and regular meeting after a motion by Missus Abramowitz and a second by Mister Patton. The board then approved payment of bills totaling $536,117.93; staff noted the largest single payment related to the Lewis kitchen project, which the superintendent said is on schedule to finish before the start of school despite minor sewer reconfiguration discovered during excavation.
The board approved Sunshine Law training for designees Fred Bolden and Tim Pekana. Tim Pekana described the training as a state requirement that must be satisfied once during a board member’s term and said it will be provided as a Zoom webinar by the Ohio Auditor of State's Office, currently scheduled for Oct. 1 and lasting about three hours. "This will satisfy that requirement," Pekana said.
On personnel, the board approved a limited contract for the 2026–27 school year for "Mister Campbell," who will serve part time teaching sixth-grade science and social studies, the superintendent noted. The board also approved the district parent-student handbooks and code of conduct for the 2026–27 school year after principals reviewed and updated the documents; staff said handbooks will be included in enrollment packets and posted online.
The board approved district supplemental and pupil-activity permit contracts for nonathletic roles (department heads and club advisers) representing the first half of nonathletic supplementals, and it approved the tuition reimbursements listed in the agenda attachment.
Board members also recognized student Frederick Solen for winning a silver medal at the Biolympiad national finals at Harvard; Fred Bolden said Solen was one of four silver medalists from a competitive field of more than 12,000 students from dozens of states and international schools. "This is an outstanding achievement," Bolden said.
Staff announced the 2026–27 district calendars are now maintained as live Google calendars and encouraged families to subscribe because schedules change in real time. Staff also previewed band camp and a public performance set for Friday, July 31 at 4:30 p.m. in the stadium, with students returning from the College of Wooster to present their show.
With no public commenters at the second comment period, the board moved into executive session to discuss personnel, attorney conferences and matters required to be kept confidential by federal or state law; the presiding officer said no action would be taken at that executive session.
