Board adopts multiple state-required policy updates and delays wireless-device rule for revision

The board voted to adopt several custom policy updates provided by the School Boards Association that implement recent state laws; the board also voted to remove policy 43-18 (the wireless-communication-device policy) from the packet for additional work. Administration explained that district practice (K–8 students turn devices in at the start of the day; high school students turn devices in by period) differs slightly from the two conflicting model policies the association provided, so the district will draft a hybrid policy that matches current code-of-conduct practice and return it for board approval in a later meeting.

Board attorney guidance emphasized that the legislature now requires boards to have written policies that include the legal requirements; administration asked the board to set aside normal first-reading timelines so the district can adopt policies and be compliant with the statutes. The board approved setting aside the standard process and then approved the custom policy packet with the wireless-device policy removed for further drafting.
