Sudbury Select Board approves Sudbury 250 Committee to plan 250th‑anniversary events

The Sudbury Select Board approved a charter on Dec. 5, 2023, establishing the Sudbury 250 Committee to plan and coordinate the town’s commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the commencement of the American Revolution, with many observances anticipated in 2025 and additional events possible on July 4, 2026.
The charter directs the committee to develop a comprehensive plan for celebrating and promoting the anniversary, to sponsor activities that reflect Sudbury’s role in national history, and to ensure events have outreach to and involvement from all residents. The document authorizes the committee to work with town staff to develop and administer programs, pursue grant applications, and to request funding through the town budget process if needed.
Membership will be appointed by the Select Board for the period Jan. 2024 through Sept. 2026 and will include up to nine individuals. The charter lists potential representatives including a Select Board member, the Town Historian, a Sudbury Public Schools / Lincoln‑Sudbury Regional High School educator, community members with historical expertise, event‑planning or logistics experts, community leaders with fundraising experience, business or civic groups (including literature, music and the arts), the Town Manager or designee (ex‑officio), and public safety (ex‑officio). The committee must elect a chair, vice‑chair and clerk; a quorum is a majority of full members.
The committee may appoint subcommittees to carry out specific tasks and is instructed to engage with other 250 committees in Massachusetts to learn about related ideas and activities. The charter requires the committee to ensure activities reflect commitments to diversity, inclusiveness, sustainability and accessibility so people of all abilities can participate and to identify opportunities for individuals or organizations to take part in celebrations.
To solicit public input and maintain transparency, the committee must hold public forums and provide periodic updates to the Select Board at least quarterly. The clerk (if elected) must keep full minutes and an attendance list for each meeting, submit minutes to the committee for approval, file them with the Town Clerk, and post them to the Town’s website. Meetings are to be open to the public and recorded.
The charter requires compliance with the Massachusetts Open Meeting Law, the Public Records Law, the Conflict‑of‑Interest Law, and all other applicable Commonwealth statutes, as well as relevant town bylaws and policies, including the Town’s email communications policy for committee members.
The committee is required to file annual reports of activities with the Select Board on or before Dec. 31, 2024, and Dec. 31, 2025, and before dissolution. The charter states the committee shall be dissolved on Sept. 30, 2026, unless the Select Board votes to continue it.
Implementation of the charter will depend on Select Board appointments, subsequent committee organization (including election of officers), and any funding the committee requests and receives through the town budget or grant awards.
