Mayor Jim Cross opened a public hearing on the condition of a house at 425 W. 7th Street on March 4, 2025. Building Inspector Garrett Berry provided the council with an inspection update; nearby residents urged the council to act to address what they described as hazards at the property.
Residents who spoke during the public-comment period included Mike Heaton of 435 W. 7th Street, Scott and Denise Schultz of 407 W. 7th Street, and Brad Dinkel of 636 N. Grant Street. They told the council they were concerned about the condition of the 425 W. 7th Street property and asked for a formal remedy. (Tyler Allison, owner of 737 E. Oakdale Ave, separately asked for more time for demolition of property during public comment.)
Following the hearing, Councilmember Brad Wagner moved a resolution finding the house at 425 W. 7th Street unsafe and directing that the structure be repaired or removed and the premises made safe; Councilmember Caleigh Befort seconded. The motion carried unanimously.
The resolution gives the city authority to require repairs or to order removal of the structure and to see that the site is made safe; the minutes do not specify a compliance deadline or subsequent enforcement steps. The council did not record further debate in the minutes.
Next steps: the council adopted the resolution and the city’s building-inspection office will carry out the directive as provided by the resolution.
