Board schedules July work session to prioritize boiler, roof and science wing projects

During reports the superintendent provided a facilities update that covered routine maintenance and several larger capital needs. The board discussed priorities and scheduled a work session to develop a 10-year plan and a prioritized repairs list.
Dr. Manning said custodial crews have completed floor stripping and waxing at district sites, the high-school chemistry classroom received new tile and cove base, and requisitions for high school wall pads are being processed with a PO to be completed next week. He reported two new maintenance vehicles are being outfitted and the district is seeking a 10-passenger van for student transport. Plans are in place to issue a paving bid for Gilmer County High School, and the district will resubmit a failed boiler/piping bid for the middle school science area.
Large CEFP projects remain the boiler system, the vocational roof and the GCHS science wing roof; Dr. Manning said these are multimillion-dollar projects and the district has not yet secured SBA funding. Board members discussed whether to form a standing committee to track project needs and funding; several members asked for a prioritized list by cost and urgency and for enrollment data to inform long-term planning.
Board member Dr. Miller and others recommended a work session before the next regular meeting. The board set a 4:00 p.m. work session on July 27 to hear detailed needs from the superintendent and facilities director and to begin drafting a prioritized facilities plan.
