Providence school board approves two-year extension for ABM facilities management contract

The Providence School Board voted Jan. 7 to approve the first two-year extension of its integrated facilities management contract with ABM, following a staff presentation that reviewed the original 2023 procurement and summarized performance and cost comparisons.
District staff told the board the original RFP in February 2023 produced multiple bidders and that the contract structure had shifted from task-based to performance-based measures. Staff said ABM’s extension bid was approximately $1,300,000 less than Aramark’s for the same extension period and reported a record of satisfactory performance across the contract’s three-year term.
Board members pressed staff on remedies and exit options if performance declines. A district speaker said there are day-to-day management channels and contractual termination provisions allowing the district to give notice if performance is unacceptable.
"There is if the district has ever — we can provide notice to terminate the contract," a district official said when asked about enforcement options.
The motion to approve the ABM extension was made, seconded and carried by voice vote. The district said staff will continue to monitor performance and use contractual mechanisms if necessary.
