Astoria City’s Parks Board heard a presentation from staff and consultants on an update to the city’s Parks Master Plan and provided initial priorities to be shared with the public.
Staff and Mackenzie consultants Ian Sisson and Brian Varrichione outlined the plan update steps and timelines and asked the board for feedback on what to emphasize during public outreach. Board members identified priorities including revitalizing parks, improving signage and wayfinding, increasing lighting for safety, expanding indoor play options and evaluating whether some underused park sites should be divested. Board members also discussed expanding aquatic programming and asked staff to consider bringing back Monday hours at the Aquatic Center.
Under the agenda item labeled “WHAT DO YOU HEAR,” Taylor Bay said families like recent improvements at Lindstrom Park but have had trouble using the Parks website; staff reported the City’s IT contractor, IFocus, is updating pages and is "making them more mobile-friendly." Staff and the consultants emphasized that more public input will improve the plan’s outcome.
In the staff report, Erin Moore asked about the Maritime Memorial; staff said repairs could potentially cost $638,000 and described the issue facing the monument. Staff also reported that attendance at the Aquatic Center and youth basketball participation are higher than at the same point in 2024.
Other items on the agenda included recognition of Lead Guard Nicolette Cooper for her work at the Aquatic Center; a report that the Uniontown Association had inquired about decorating the Doughboy Monument (staff will provide updates as details develop); and an announcement that the Aquatic Center will host a Halloween "Pumpkin Bobbin’" event on Oct. 24. The board also moved to approve the draft meeting minutes from Sept. 24 (motion by Nathan Pinkstaff; second Britta Herwig). The transcript records the motion and second but does not include a vote tally.
The board set future meetings for Dec. 17 and Jan. 28, 2026. The meeting adjourned at 7:40 a.m.
