At its July 13 organizational meeting the Brookhaven-Comsewogue Union Free School District Board of Education approved a broad set of appointments, contracts, policies and calendar items needed for the 2026–27 school year.
Key approvals included the appointment of Jacqueline Yates as district clerk and Tim Doornachek as deputy district clerk; motion to appoint Laura Rempe as district treasurer (oath to be administered within 30 days); appointment of Jacqueline Laitz as deputy district treasurer; and appointments of surrogate parents, attendance and residency officers and other administrative positions. The board also approved numerous teaching and staff appointments and accepted several resignations as part of personnel housekeeping.
Financial and contracting actions included retaining Bond, Schoeneck & King, PLLC as legal counsel on retainer and Hawkins Delafield & Wood LLP as bond counsel; authorizing R.S. Abrams & Co. as external auditor and Naraki Smith LLP as internal auditor; approving participation in the Long Island Nutrition Cooperative bid for cafeteria services; designating official district newspapers (Times Beacon, Long Island Business News; Newsday as alternate); authorizing district credit cards for specified administrators; and awarding bids for printing and boiler/HVAC services.
The board adopted the district purchasing policy and the investment policy for 2026–27, authorized petty cash funds under specified supervisors, and set mileage reimbursement consistent with IRS rates and a $20 per day rate for certain district travel. The board set the budget hearing for Monday, May 10, 2027 and the annual budget vote and trustee election for Tuesday, May 18, 2027.
The board adopted two resolutions of note: one authorizing participation with a regional Risk Operations Center (RIC 1 / ROC) to negotiate data-privacy agreements consistent with Education Law 2-d and Part 121, while reserving the district’s right to review DPAs with its own counsel; and a second, under Real Property Tax Law §458-a(11), to exempt qualifying seriously disabled veterans from school-district taxation effective for rolls with taxable status dates on or after Oct. 1, 2026. The district clerk was directed to notify the New York State Department of Veterans’ Services and the local assessor as required by statute.
All motions and resolutions were approved by voice vote with no roll-call tallies recorded in the transcript. The board concluded routine business, offered kudos to district staff for year-end work, and voted to adjourn into executive session to discuss personnel matters.
