City Manager Randy Eads presented the staff report and read the ordinance by caption only.
Eads said the ordinance "gives us another tool to use as we're dealing with property that could endanger the public health or safety of residents" and noted it supplements other sections of state code (15.2-900, 15.2-907, 15.2-1115). He told council that noncompliance could result in a fine of "a thousand dollar a day penalty for non-compliance." Council approved first reading by a 4-0 vote.
The ordinance provides a statutory enforcement mechanism to address buildings, walls or other structures judged to endanger public safety. The council did not adopt the ordinance on final reading during this meeting; the record shows only first reading by caption.
