Canton board approves architect contract, high school reconfiguration, nine student transfers and 27 personnel actions

The Canton Public School District Board of Trustees approved several consent-agenda items and a broad personnel slate at a special meeting on July 30.
On the consent agenda the board approved a contract for Root + Jones Architects, PLLC to provide professional services related to a district building project, and approved reconfiguring Canton High School to include Grade 9.
The board also approved nine student transfer requests for the 2024–25 school year; the minutes indicate the transfers were granted in cases where the student’s parent or guardian is employed by the Madison School District. Examples listed in the minutes include Eva Abrams (4th grade) and Jackson Martindale (6th grade).
The personnel consent approved items 5.1–5.27. The slate contains a mix of teacher hires, long-term substitutes, teacher assistants, ISS teachers and new security posts. Most personnel actions are effective Aug. 1, 2024; one hire (Alexander Mumford) is noted to begin Jan. 6, 2025, and Barbara Brown’s appointment runs through Dec. 23, 2024 per the minutes.
The motion to approve items 4.1–4.3 and the motion to approve 5.1–5.27 were made and seconded by board trustees and passed by majority. Two trustees were absent for the meeting: Dr. Shivochie Dinkins and Lenderrick Taylor.
The minutes list the district’s regular meeting schedule and venues for the coming months and note the board adjourned after completing business that included the personnel vote and the executive-session action announced later.
