Newton County approves juvenile services grant application and accepts accountability court operating grant

The Newton County Board of Commissioners granted permission for the juvenile court to apply for a continuation 'children in need of services' grant and approved acceptance of the Council of Accountability Court Judges (CACJ) FY27 accountability court operating grant.
Juvenile court representative Jennifer Moore said the children-in-need-of-services grant is a continuation award that serves at-risk girls and their families for 24-week interventions, serving roughly 40 girls per year. She said the grant is $100,000, with no county match and no funded county positions attached. "We currently have this grant, so this is just a continuation grant," Moore said.
Thomas, presenting an adult drug-court request, asked the board to accept the CACJ FY27 award of $285,331. He said the award requires a 15% match of approximately $50,353. The grant is intended to sustain and enhance court operations, staffing and treatment from 07/01/2026 through 06/30/2027.
Commissioner Long asked whether program administrators could consolidate overlapping accountability court programs and plan for sustainability should grant funding decline. "I think that we need to be innovative and look forward for solutions ... maybe there's a possibility where we can combine some of these accountabilities and have like 1 director," Long said.
The board voted to permit the juvenile court to apply for the $100,000 continuation grant and to accept the CACJ FY27 accountability court operating grant with the stated match requirement.
