At the May 19 meeting Mayor announced that the city's third-party utility-billing vendor closed its doors abruptly the previous Friday, leaving staff to hand-print, stamp and mail about 11,000 water, sewer and garbage bills.
"Friday a week ago on the 9th ... said, we're out of business," the mayor said. He said staff managed to process and mail roughly half of the bills on Friday and completed the remainder the following day. The mayor thanked staff who manually compiled and delivered the bills to the post office.
The mayor said the city will urgently solicit replacement vendors and, if necessary, call a special board meeting to authorize a contract before the next billing cycle. A board member added staff will expedite vendor selection to avoid a repeat.
The board did not report a vendor name or a contract award at the meeting; the mayor cautioned some customers might receive bills one or two days later than usual while staff transition to a new vendor.
