Brandon seeks water-well grants and plans waterline upgrades for Burnham Road area

Mayor told the board on May 19 that the city is pursuing multiple grant mechanisms to fund a new municipal water well to serve the west side of Brandon.
The mayor said the city already has a Corps of Engineers-related grant of $3,200,000 for a water well project and is preparing applications for two additional mechanisms: a 50/50 grant and an 80/20 matching option. He estimated the cost of a new well at about $3,000,000 and said staff will apply for both programs and prioritize the 80/20 option if awarded.
Separately, the mayor described plans to replace an existing circa-1960 six-inch water line on Burnham Road with a 10-inch main to reduce friction loss uphill toward a 500,000-gallon Caney Circle tank and improve service for Burnham Road, Stonehenge and adjacent areas. The mayor noted similar past projects on College Street and Buick Well Road where reconstruction temporarily disrupted neighborhoods but ultimately improved service.
Board members asked procedural questions about grant match percentages and authorized staff to continue grant work; the mayor said final project decisions and formal board approvals will return to the board as required.
