Kure Beach committee plans signage, festival leadership and hears public complaints about M Avenue outfall

The Kure Beach Shoreline Access and Beach Protection Committee on Jan. 6 reviewed its priorities for the year — signage, toybox labels, brochures, magnets and festival planning — and heard public comments about human waste near an M Avenue outfall and a dune backfill issue.
Rick Jackson, co‑chair of the committee, and Randy Bock agreed to produce an inventory of signs and equipment for inclusion in the current budget. The committee decided to add a “Please NO TRASH” sign to the toyboxes and to begin post‑renourishment signage planning earlier than in prior years.
Kelly Priest and Elizabeth Kiwaha agreed to co‑lead the May Kure Beach Festival, and the committee approved distribution of Kure Beach brochures to real‑estate and rental offices and making magnets available at Town Hall. Current giveaways include branded ChapStick and glasses‑cleaning cloths.
Jennifer, a guest at the meeting, reported a public‑health concern at M Avenue: “there is an outfall at M Avenue and people are going under the walkway to literally poop,” she said, and asked whether fencing similar to the barrier at H Avenue could be installed. Howard, a guest, said when workers reconstructed the dune at M Avenue they left a large frontal dune that “just drops off,” and that the back of the dune was not replaced; he asked whether the town would fill in the rear section.
Rick Jackson said he would check into the fencing request and Dennis Panicali advised Rick and Byron Ashbridge to reach out to Jimmy and Bethany for follow‑up. Committee members also discussed planting roles: Byron said dune replanting will likely be contracted out rather than done by volunteers.
The committee was reminded of a Community Center open house scheduled for Jan. 13 from 6–8 p.m. Members agreed to move the March meeting to Thursday, March 5, because of elections and voted to cancel the February meeting due to many members’ unavailability. The meeting adjourned at 5:47 p.m.; minutes were submitted by Elizabeth Kiwaha.
