Mayor DeStefano opened the meeting by recognizing the Middletown girls flag‑football team for a historic season that included a second consecutive Section 9 championship, a regional championship and advancement to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association state Final Four — the first Section 9 girls flag‑football team to reach that stage. He said the recognition comes from the Common Council and the enlarged Middletown school district.
"These young women represented Middletown, the Middletown School District with pride, sportsmanship, and class both on and off the field," the mayor said, and announced certificates of recognition would be presented. He thanked head coach Michael Conklin and other coaching staff, parents, teachers and school administrators for their support.
Coach Michael Conklin (named by the mayor) accepted the recognition and thanked the council and community for support, calling the season a strong showing and expressing optimism for next year. Several players and coaches were called forward to receive certificates.
The mayor also used his remarks to note other local recognitions — including the Middletown Art Group’s 80th anniversary — and to welcome new downtown businesses.
