Mayor Brad Cullen outlines rescheduled fireworks, Route 18 update and tax-bill guidance

Mayor Brad Cullen used the council’s July 13 meeting to give several community updates and event reminders. He announced the cancelled July 4 fireworks have been rescheduled for Labor Day weekend: “it’ll be the Saturday the 5th with a rain date of the 6th,” he said.
On transportation, Cullen said he and township representatives met with the State Department of Transportation about Route 18, and that the DOT remains on schedule to finish the work “by the end of the year,” though he said the township will press for an earlier completion if possible.
Cullen also explained why many residents are receiving larger-looking third-quarter estimated tax bills: the bills are estimates because the township does not yet have final tax rates from the county and other taxing bodies. “The average increase is about 4 percent — 4.6, I think, percent,” he said, adding that the apparent increase reflects the timing of when rate changes are applied and a roughly 6% increase being accounted for the school system.
For residents seeking indoor walking options while the mall is closed for renovations, Cullen suggested the municipal rink and mezzanine: he said one loop around both rinks and the mezzanine is about one-third of a mile, so “if you do that 3 times, it’s a mile.”
He announced a town-hall meeting set for Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Community Arts Center and promoted the East Brunswick market scheduled for Friday evening (about 50 vendors expected). He also reminded residents about a July 15 blood drive at the library and a property-tax relief filing event on July 23.
Cullen closed by thanking township crews and police for their storm response during recent weather events.
