DDA sticks to 50% nonprofit rate and staff fee for Muscle on the Beach fundraiser
Summary
After a request from Sandaway House, the Delray Beach DDA said it will not fully waive rental fees for the Muscle on the Beach car show; the board applied its 50% nonprofit rate and required a $1,500 staff/operations fee to cover on-site costs.

The Downtown Development Authority voted July 13 to deny a full rental-fee waiver for Muscle on the Beach, a long-running car-show fundraiser that benefits Sandaway House.
Danica, a Sandaway House representative, described the event as the nonprofit’s biggest annual fundraiser and told the DDA the event brought in about $81,000 last year. Staff recommended against a full waiver because of tight DDA finances and proposed retaining the DDA’s standard local nonprofit discount plus collection of staff/operation costs to cover on-site services.
The board adopted the approach used for local nonprofits: a 50% rental discount and payment of a $1,500 operations/staffing fee. A board member moved the motion to apply the 50% rate plus the $1,500 cost; the motion was seconded and approved by the board.
Board members emphasized the event’s economic benefit—"They bring 5 to 6,000 people on a Saturday in March to the downtown," a director said—while noting the DDA must balance event support with its limited operating budget.
Next steps: staff will finalize the rental terms with the organizer and provide a written permit/fee schedule reflecting the board’s decision.
