Board hears split views on merging Peculiar youth football with CCJ; soccer, pickleball registrations reported

A parks board commissioner gave a multi-item report on youth sports, saying soccer schedules will be hosted in Peculiar and noting registration for the Little Kickers program stood at 15 so far, below the typical 30–40 that the program usually achieves.

Pickleball registration was reported with a deadline of April 20 and a planned April 29 start; about 18 people had registered so far. Commissioners said they hoped to reach 12–15 teams.

A lengthy exchange centered on a possible merge of Peculiar’s youth tackle football program with the regional CCJ league. One commissioner said CCJ coaches favor a single, merged league and argued a merger could save the city money on jerseys, entry fees and fundraising overhead. Other board members said local boards and parents prefer keeping decisionmaking and fundraising local; they described political disagreements that led to an earlier split and said rejoining would require reconciling governance and community priorities.

Commissioners discussed pragmatic benefits and drawbacks: consolidation could reduce duplication and lower per-player costs, while a local program preserves identity and control over team composition. No formal action or vote on a merger was taken; the topic was discussed as an ongoing operational question.

Board members also said flag football and fall football plans are proceeding, with local family sponsorship lined up to offset costs. Basketball season wrapped up with positive feedback; staff and coaches are exploring use of a larger gym in Raymore next season.

The board adjourned after routine business; no final decisions were recorded about a CCJ merger.
