Superintendent says district will review activity and sports fees; formal proposals expected in August

The Teton County School District will review and likely adjust activity and sports fees to better reflect the actual costs of running programs, Superintendent Brian Ashen told the board.
Ashen said fees such as the longstanding $35 sports fee have not been updated for years and that the district is evaluating costs for athletics and other activities including transportation and travel. "What we charge them, the $35 sports fee, they haven't paid since they played junior jazz when they were in 2nd grade or 3rd grade," he said, describing a need to "close the revenue gap." He added the district will continue to carry costs for students who cannot afford fees to avoid excluding participation.
Because the fee proposals were not ready for action, the board amended the agenda to move TMS and THS activity-fee items to a future meeting. Ashen said the administration expects to present school activity and sport fees in August and is also reviewing what should and should not be assessed under new laws and district precedent.
Board members asked to see draft fee proposals and supporting data at the July 28 working meeting before formal adoption. No specific fee amounts were proposed during this meeting.
