Rutherford’s mayor and council approved several routine personnel and project items by consent and heard an engineer’s update on transportation and park projects.
Engineer: The borough engineer reported that a pre‑construction meeting for the 2025 roadway improvements program was held Dec. 11 and construction is expected to begin this spring. Beach Street work is complete; Clark Avenue and Inslee are scheduled for paving. The borough delivered a gazebo for Lincoln Park and submitted required NJDEP MS4 mapping and a watershed inventory before the January 1 deadline.
Grants: The borough won multiple grants: $664,000 from a 2025 Transportation Alternatives set‑aside for Union Avenue safety and streetscape improvements; $536,000 through Green Acres for Tamblin Field playground work (preliminary assessment sent to DEP); and $220,000 from the DOT transit‑village program for Rutherford Station Square phase 2 (wayfinding signage and bicycle infrastructure). The engineer said design work would proceed toward bidding and that some coordination with Passaic Valley Sewer is ongoing for Memorial Park improvements.
Consent votes and hires: The council unanimously approved an amended consent agenda after adding authorization for a March Youth Arts Month banner program. By consent the council appointed Dominic Ferry as the licensed water/wastewater operator for 2026 at an annual rate of $4,500, approved Michelle DeLucas as a substitute bus driver at $25 per hour, and approved the boards and commissions list and committee assignments. The council also added Mike McCarthy, Spencer Ross and Rosemary Chorda to the World Cup Committee.
Closed session: The council adopted a resolution to hold a closed session under the Open Public Meetings Act to discuss public‑safety planning for an upcoming World Cup event; council members returned to open session later the same evening.
The meeting concluded after committee updates and adjournment.
