Council introduces rezoning to allow new fire station at 3600 University Parkway

The Natchitoches City Council introduced Ordinance 12 of 2026 on April 13 to rezone approximately 1.56 acres at 3600 University Parkway (the planned site of a new fire station) from R-2 to R-1.
Councilman Nielsen presented the rezoning introduction and city planner Shantrell (introduced by the mayor) described the action as largely procedural: “This is more or less a formality making sure that we stay in line with our zoning ordinances. Fire station is not in use by right in R-2, so that’s why we’re rezoning it to R-1.”
Staff said the Planning Commission recommended approval at its March 7, 2026 meeting. Council members were told that the ordinance would be presented for a vote at a subsequent meeting, and staff encouraged members to contact planning staff with questions in the interim.
The introduction does not itself change zoning; a formal vote will be required for rezoning to take effect.
