Lancaster Select Board hears department updates, storm-repair progress and public concerns about Stone Street sidewalk
Summary
Fire, police and library chiefs updated the board on calls, equipment and programs. Town Manager Jessica Cyr reported on pool repairs, planned fountain work, a coordinated disaster drill and MTBE-funded removal of empty gas tanks; public comment included a petition request to omit the Stone Street sidewalk.
Department heads and town staff briefed the Select Board on operational matters at the May 19 meeting.
Fire Chief Randy Flynn reported year-to-date call statistics and listed near-term equipment repairs and maintenance: a leaking drain on E4 to be fixed, ladder truck rung repair in Ossipee, air-pack and compressor servicing with no major defects, one of two new ambulances to be put in service and subframe repairs on the chief’s car scheduled by the end of the week. Chief Flynn also noted prepayments from neighboring towns for mutual aid services (Lunenburg prepaid $15,000; Jefferson has paid; waiting on Guildhall).
Police Chief Jon Woodworth reported year-to-date calls and said the department will run a Bike to School event on May 28; the speed trailer is being deployed around town and is available on request from residents. Librarian Barbara Robarts said summer programs will be offered each afternoon, a book sale is scheduled for Saturday and she is awaiting HVAC/furnace news.
Town Manager Jessica Cyr updated the board on facilities and planning: pool pump installation is complete and the pool roof is expected to be replaced soon; a fabricator will meet with highway and water/sewer supervisors about fountain drilling and line installation; and staff, school and healthcare partners are coordinating a community disaster drill building on earlier tabletop exercises. Cyr also said the town currently has zero welfare applicants, interviews for the Finance Director position are scheduled, and that the town’s gas tanks are nearly empty with diesel tanks to be removed and removal funded under the MTBE Settlement Fund.
Public comment included Melissa Grella asking that Stone Street not receive a sidewalk and being advised to gather a petition of the eight residents on that street and to meet with Highway Foreman Tim Brown about paving plans; Tim expects paving mid-June. Rob Christie said the Connecticut River Committee has limited activity but will forward permits to the Select Board and noted a large air show at the MWR Airport in late June.
