Select Board approves $15,690 for new waste-oil furnace at Transfer Station

The Lancaster Select Board voted July 7 to spend $15,690 from the Motor Vehicle Waste Fund to buy a replacement waste-oil furnace for the town Transfer Station.
Transfer Station Supervisor Rusty Scott told the board the original furnace was installed about 25 years ago and that the manufacturer stopped producing replacement parts in 2012. Scott said the contractor who services the unit warned that remaining service parts are low and that a slightly higher-BTU furnace would better serve the space.
Rob Christie, speaking during the public hearing, asked whether the existing furnace remained serviceable. Selectman Leon Rideout said the board should replace the unit now rather than risk a winter failure with no available parts. Selectman Kathy-Jean Lavoie confirmed the Motor Vehicle Waste Fund may only be used for purchases that fall within the fund’s rules and that a waste-oil furnace is an allowable expenditure.
A motion by Selectman Rideout, seconded by Selectman Lavoie, to authorize the $15,690 expenditure from the Motor Vehicle Waste Fund carried unanimously. Selectman Shane Beattie closed the public hearing following the vote.
The board did not specify an installation date in the meeting minutes; procurement and installation scheduling will be handled by town staff as the purchase proceeds.
