The City of Charleston Committee on Ways and Means on July 14 approved a slate of grant actions affecting public safety and community services.
The committee voted to accept a 2026–27 School Resource Officer grant in the amount of $1,122,110, which the city said will continue funding for four existing SRO positions and provide SROs for four additional schools. Chair (speaking for the committee) introduced the item and noted Chief Walker was present; the committee approved the acceptance by voice vote.
The committee also approved the mayor’s submission of a continuation application to the South Carolina opioid relief fund seeking $1,260,000. The Mayor clarified that the requested funds would be split among police, fire and community development. No local match was required for the opioid-relief application, and the committee voted to approve the submission.
Separately, the committee authorized submission of an application for the fiscal year 2026 Port Security Grant Program for $1,410,000. Proposed investments listed by staff included a quick-response boat, an x-ray system, and maritime operations and safety gear; the item had previously been approved by the Public Safety committee and was approved by Ways and Means.
Chair also presented several other grant acceptances and allocations that were approved on consent, including a $40,000 DFE fund award to support a legal fellow and pro bono services for the Charleston Financial Empowerment Center and a pending Walmart Spark Good Local grant to bolster the city’s compost program and outreach.
The committee did not record roll-call tallies in the transcript; actions were approved by voice vote with 'ayes' recorded. The items move forward to whatever administrative execution the mayor’s office and relevant departments require.
