Platte County commission approves sheriff-office contracts for vehicles, body shop, tethered drone and school resource officers

Jeffrey Shanks, speaking for the sheriff’s office, presented a series of items to the Platte County Commission on March 23 and the board approved each by 3-0 vote.
On Resolution 2026RES013 the commission authorized publication of qualified proposals for purchase or lease of current-model county and law-enforcement vehicles. On 2026RES014 the commission authorized publication of qualified proposals for body shop services for the sheriff’s office for the 2026 budget year.
Shanks also asked the board to approve a contract under a Sourcewell cooperative purchasing agreement to buy an Elastair tethered drone with accessories. He said the purchase would extend deployment time compared with battery-powered drones and would be assigned to a vehicle; he quoted the budget impact as $18,960.99 with funds split from the sheriff’s 2026 budget line and contract funds. The commission approved the contract 3-0.
On school safety, Shanks presented renewal agreements: a contract with North Platte School District for a school resource officer for the 2026–27 school year with a quoted budget impact of $74,291.40 plus benefits (the district would pay 8% of salary and benefits for one deputy), and a similar renewal for West Platte School District (quoted $74,002.91 plus benefits, with the district paying 80% of salary and benefits for one deputy). Both SRO contracts were approved 3-0.
The commission also approved the annual equitable sharing agreement and certification for fiscal year 2025, which Shanks said has no budget impact.
What happens next: contracts will be executed per county procurement rules and funding confirmations by the auditor; the drone purchase is to be procured through Sourcewell cooperative purchasing.
