Platte County schedules April 6 public hearing on 2026 budget amendment after auditor request; sheriff objects and threatens legal action

Kevin Robinson, Platte County auditor, asked the county commission on March 23 to set a public hearing for 10 a.m. on April 6 to consider amendments to the county's 2026 budget, and said proposed amendments would be published by 10 a.m. on March 27. A commissioner moved to approve scheduling the hearing and the motion was seconded and put to roll call.
Sheriff Eric Collin objected during the discussion, saying the commission has previously moved $315,000 out of his budget “over my objection” and saying he believes the board lacks legal authority to reallocate appropriated funds. “You leave me no choice but to sue the county commission,” Collin said, adding he would notify the attorney general.
Commissioners and the auditor pushed back that the motion before them was only to schedule a public hearing, not to adopt an amendment. Commissioner (speaker 2) said the amendment request was meant to fix what the auditor’s office acknowledged as a typographical error: a line for equipment rental that was intended to be $35,000 appeared as $350,000 in the budget, a $315,000 difference. The commissioner said the correction would restore the intended $35,000 line item.
Robinson told the board that the hearing notice would be published and the public given the required opportunity to review proposed changes before the April 6 session. Following the discussion, the commission approved the motion to set the hearing by a 3-0 vote.
The exchange between the sheriff and commissioners continued later in the meeting. The county prosecutor, speaking later in the session, praised first responders after a recent fatal crash and raised public-safety concerns tied to major upcoming regional events; he also criticized the timing of the proposed budget changes.
What happens next: proposed budget amendments are to be published by March 27. The commission will hold the public hearing on April 6, where the amendment text and any related testimony or motions will be considered before any formal vote on budget changes.
