Titus County approves step‑pay adjustment for jail corporals after sheriff’s request
Summary
Sheriff Greg asked the court to modify the existing step plan so promotion from FTO to corporal results in a pay increase rather than a 20¢ cut; the court approved a step‑plan modification that staff said requires no new budget dollars.

Sheriff Greg told the Titus County Commissioner's Court on July 13 that the county’s current step raise system causes a pay cut when a jail training officer (FTO) is promoted to corporal, which discourages advancement. "If they do that, they would get an extra 50¢ an hour ... If they do promote from an FTO to a corporal, they would actually make a raise instead of taking a 20¢ an hour pay cut," Sheriff Greg said.
The sheriff asked the court to reallocate existing step‑raise line items so promoted corporals receive an effective increase to roughly $23.30 per hour rather than a reduction. County staff explained the money is already included in the budget on collective step‑raise lines and that the court’s approval would modify the step plan rather than add new funding to the budget.
Miss Nunez (county staff) explained the step raises are budgeted collectively and that the court’s action would update the wage value in the step plan. "The money's already there," she said, and approving the change would modify the plan to reflect the new rate.
Commissioner Applewhite moved to approve the step plan change; Commissioner Mitchell seconded. The motion carried unanimously.
The court did not increase overall budgeted dollars at the meeting; staff will update the step plan and reflect the change in payroll records.
