Appling County approves budget and personnel moves, schedules tire recycling and advances road assessment

It also approved the 2023 holiday schedule and the 2023 Board of Commissioners meeting schedule, and it approved a Christmas holiday bonus of $500 for full-time employees and $250 for part-time employees.
In personnel actions, the board named Timmy McGuirt as Parks and Recreation Director in a motion by Commissioner Sarah Boatright, seconded by Commissioner Charlie Leggett. Recreation updates included a $2,380 Atlanta Hawks Junior NBA grant to support the local basketball program and notice that the Aquatic Center facility was turned over to the county on Sept. 28, 2022, with a contractor punch list remaining.
On roads and engineering, the board authorized proceeding with a Road Paving Assessment Project and directed staff to use Roberts Civil Engineering for engineering services to prepare a report. Earlier, Interim County Manager Mike Deal and consultant Reid Lovett presented a Proposed 2023 LMIG cost estimate and recommended creating a Road Priority List; the board moved the LMIG/road-priority discussion to the regular agenda for fuller consideration.
The county also announced it received a $50,000 scrap-tire recycling grant with restrictions (no large tires; limit 10 tires per household). Free collection events are scheduled Nov. 5 and Nov. 19, 2022, 9 a.m.–2 p.m., at the Appling County Landfill, 8595 East River Rd.
