The Poplar Bluff City Council heard a presentation on April 20 about a proposed emergency backup well on Alice Street intended to provide an alternate water source if the main facility is compromised. Assistant City Manager Laurie Phelps said the estimated total cost is approximately $1,700,000 and that the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) grant program would cover roughly 75% of the project while municipal utilities would provide the 25% match.
Phelps said the submission on the April 20 agenda was a notice of interest rather than the formal application and asked the council for verbal approval to proceed with the notice. Councilmembers indicated consensus to move forward with the notice of interest; staff said the city has applied in prior years and been denied and described this as another attempt to secure BRIC funding.
No binding obligation was created by the notice of interest; the city will bring future formal application materials and any required budget match to council for approval as the process proceeds.
