Montrose County commissioners used a general business item Nov. 6 to highlight work with the City of Montrose and local veterans on a proposed Veterans Memorial Park and to approve the veteran service officer monthly report.
Commissioners said the county has met with local veterans and the city to collaborate on a park project near the Botanic Gardens with views of the San Juan Mountains. The chair said the county and city will work together on a final design and fundraising options — including memorial bricks for families — and called the park "a signature event" opportunity for annual Veterans Day observations.
The board also voted to approve the veteran service officer monthly report and an October pay request after a motion and second; the motion carried on an oral 'aye' vote. Commissioners noted that final design decisions and any phased construction would be matters for the incoming board to consider.
No specific funding sources, total project cost, or firm schedule were presented at the meeting; commissioners said staff and a local group led by Jim Schneid would continue design work and cost analysis.
