Council discussed a potential purchase of the George Washington Academy property as an interim recreation center. Councilmember Travis Kay said the seller would not accept less than $2.4 million and that the purchase would only make sense with grant assistance. “They wouldn’t be able to go lower than $2.4 million; it would only make sense to purchase this if we were able to get a grant to help offset costs,” Kay said.
Councilmember Byron Lewis noted past efforts to secure funding for a child development center and said the town has a grant writer working on projects such as the animal shelter who could search for funding opportunities. Kay added the seller might include three additional acres with the property. Councilmember Cory Johnson said he would prefer a recreation center near donated church property and ballfields if that option becomes available; Mark Sheen said the church’s leadership had recommended donating property and he expected more information from church real estate at a future meeting.
No purchase vote or formal direction was taken; councilmembers asked staff to continue exploring grant options and return with more details.
