Police chief highlights summer outreach trips, National Night Out and large backpack giveaway

At the July 13 Prospect Heights City Council meeting the police chief summarized the department's summer outreach program and upcoming community events.
The chief said the program's first trip on July 8 took approximately 64 children, mostly from the East Side, to Harper College and the Park District pool. Additional trips planned include Camp Duncan and a likely July 31 outing to Lincoln Park Zoo; the department also expects to bring children to the Chicago Fire game on Aug. 1. The chief said lunches and snacks are provided and parents must register children.
The chief also announced two community events: National Night Out on Aug. 4 (to be held in conjunction with the Park District) and a back-to-school backpack giveaway on Aug. 5, organized with Omni and other partners, with an expected distribution of about 3,400 backpacks at an East Side park.
Mayor commented positively on the outreach program, noting past experience on ride-alongs and praising staff and volunteers for their work with children.
