Spring Grove council approves 7% property tax levy for 2026

The Spring Grove City Council on Dec. 16 approved a $746,363 property tax levy for 2026, a 7% increase from 2025, after holding a Truth in Taxation public hearing.
Mayor Bryan Wilhelmson said the 2026 levy “would be $746,363, which is a 7% increase,” down from an earlier preliminary estimate of a 29% hike. He told the council the higher levy reflects a backlog of street projects delayed in past years that now must be completed.
During public comment, resident George Lesnar said he was concerned other cities had limited increases to about 3% and asked whether the higher levy was intended to pay for a new library, city hall or fire station; he was told the increase was not for those projects. After the hearing, Council Member Trent Turner moved to approve Resolution 25-48 approving the 2026 tax levy; Council Member Morgan Buckland seconded the motion and all present voted in favor. The motion carried.
The levy approval follows the city’s budget process and the council’s effort to balance one-time and ongoing maintenance needs, particularly for street repairs that the mayor said contributed to the increase. The council set its next regular meeting for Jan. 20, 2026, when several other budget and program items will be reviewed.
