The City of Bowie's Diversity Committee presented recognitions at the July 30 council meeting for Disability Pride Month and French American Heritage Month.
"Disability Pride Month is observed each July to celebrate disability identity and culture," Carla Carter, chair of the Diversity Committee, told the council, and she highlighted the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 as a landmark civil-rights law that ensures equal access to public services. Carter recognized local leaders who advanced accessibility and universal-design initiatives in Prince George's County, including advocates who contributed to county-level universal-design legislation and digital-access efforts.
The council also adopted Proclamation P-7-26 recognizing Del Billings for 23 years of service on the Public Safety Committee. Billings accepted the recognition and reflected on collaboration with police leadership and his work supporting public safety; he praised Bowie as "the best bar none."
These recognitions were presented as part of the council's ceremonial and committee reports; no formal policy actions were taken during the presentation.
What happens next: The Diversity Committee will continue outreach and recognition efforts; the proclamation will be presented to Del Billings and documented in city records.
