The Merton Community School District Facility Committee reviewed a proposal to install a 5,500-square-foot mini turf soccer field at the primary school to replace a frequently muddy play area and expand year-round athletic use.
Presenter (S1) said the site would be used for soccer and other recess or physical-education activities, and described preliminary bids and fundraising: “PTO is anticipating $40,000 is what they are hoping to move forward with their contributions,” Presenter (S1) said, and staff reported the highest bid received so far was about $75,000 while additional contractors were preparing bids.
Committee members and staff discussed drainage, fall-height safety pads, size options and surface materials. Staff said the ground would drain to the south and that turf vendors typically install drainage systems under the turf; staff also recommended adding a safety pad for fall protection in high-use spots, which would increase cost. Presenter (S1) said the turf would use athletic-grade synthetic turf without rubber infill.
On financing, Presenter (S1) said the district could likely absorb part of the cost in next year’s budget while PTO fundraising would cover a portion; staff estimated a district share in the range of $30,000–$35,000 if costs fall near estimates and the PTO contributes as planned. Presenter (S1) said staff plans to put the turf item on the November board agenda and, if supported, pursue contractor selection for a summer 2026 installation.
Committee members asked staff to continue gathering bids, confirm drainage and warranty details with vendors, and return with a defined funding plan before the board takes formal action.
Next steps: staff to collect final bids, confirm drainage and warranty specifics, and include the turf proposal on the November board agenda for possible board action.
