Percy Julian construction reaches major milestones as district updates capital projects

Pete Zar, representing Volker, gave a monthly capital improvement program update during the July 14 work session, reporting that work on Percy Julian is progressing and that other projects have moved into active construction.

"We have started our brick installation. . . 44% complete," Zar said, describing progress on academic wings A and B, a 90% dried‑in roof on section C and an auditorium slab that was poured last month. He said structural steel and storm‑shelter work are underway and site work (curb and gutter, athletic field facility footings and underground MEP rough‑in) is advancing.

Zar said the Capitol Heights project has issued notice to proceed, completed a preconstruction meeting and mobilized the contractor; the project is approximately 3% complete with site grading and utilities work. He added the team is coordinating with Alabama Power and Spire for underground utilities and that material staging is on site.

Board members complimented the visuals and progress photos Zar shared and noted increased minority business enterprise participation in the construction contract compared with prior months.

Ms. Watkins also briefed the board about a Highland Gardens Elementary canopy replacement and extension project; bids opened June 25 and the item will return next month for final board approval.

What happens next: Volker will continue construction as weather allows; the district will return procurement items such as the Highland Gardens canopy to the board for award next month.
