Jackson Weaver, an Eagle Scout candidate, asked the Borough of Old Tappan Mayor & Council on Feb. 24 for permission to repurpose a retired mailbox as an American-flag drop-off and retirement box at the DPW. "I'm Jackson Weaver, and I'm a live scout ... I'm currently working on my Eagle Scout project," he told the council and described plans to have a plaque and a dedication ceremony.
Council President Boyce moved to sponsor Weaver's project; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. "I'd like to make a motion to sponsor Jackson's Eagle Scout project," Boyce said, and several council members offered donations and veterans committee participation. Mayor (presiding) congratulated Weaver and wished him luck with the project.
Council members discussed placement logistics near the clothing-recycling area, adding a durable plaque, and coordinating with the veterans committee for the flag-retirement ceremony. Boyce and other council members said they would assist with permitting and sign-off; Weaver said he has paperwork from the 3 Rivers Council and would secure necessary signatures.
The council encouraged community involvement and donations of retired flags, and members said they would work with veterans groups to host an appropriate retirement ceremony once the box is installed. The council's action authorizes the project to proceed; Weaver will work with designated council members on final placement and a dedication date.
